Falloffs and Helpers

Falloff shapes, Freeze, Realize.

Falloff #

One Falloff component. The Add menu offers presets of its Shape: Linear, Sphere, Box, Cylinder, Radial. For how constructors read a Falloff, see Falloffs and Names.

Control What it does
Falloff Name The name constructors look for
Target Pieces, Mesh Points or Both
Vertex Group For Mesh Points. Empty uses the Falloff Name
Shape Sphere, Box, Cylinder, Linear, Noise, Object, Spline, Vertex Map, Radial
Blend Normal, Add, Subtract, Multiply, Max, Min
Opacity, Invert How strongly this layer applies, and flipping it

Shapes #

Shape What it does
Sphere, Box, Cylinder A volume: 1 inside, fading to 0 at the edge
Linear A gradient along the chosen direction
Noise Animated noise (Noise Scale, Speed, Seed)
Object Falloff from another object’s geometry (Surface, Volume or Points, within a Range)
Spline Falloff from the distance to a curve object
Vertex Map Reads a vertex group or named attribute straight in
Radial Rises by angle around the Falloff’s own Z, with Iterations for pinwheels

Panels #

  • Placement: Position, Rotation, Size, or Use Object to place it with an empty. Show Falloff draws a viewport-only wireframe that never renders. Position Space sets which axes Position uses (below).
  • Falloff: Inner Offset, Profile (Linear, Smooth, Ease In, Ease Out, Sharp, Bell, Steps), Remap Min and Max.
  • Color: Off, Solid or Gradient. Writes <Falloff Name> Color.
  • Source: Source Object, Object Mode, Range, Vertex Map Name, Radial Iterations and Offset.

Position Space #

  • Falloff Axes (default): Position moves along the Falloff’s own rotated axes. Rotate the Falloff to match an angled rig, and Position X alone moves it through the rig along that angle, with no X and Y mixing. With no rotation it is identical to Object Axes.
  • Object Axes: Position, Rotation and Size use the object’s own axes, so the Falloff is locked to the host’s axes.
  • In Falloff Axes the move gizmo is three arrows along the Falloff’s own X, Y and Z. In Object Axes the normal move gizmo is used.
  • Older files switch to Falloff Axes when you run Update Toolkit Groups, so a rotated Falloff may move. Set Position Space to Object Axes to get the old behavior back. See Update and Repair.

Helper buttons #

In the Ordimus tab, Falloff Helpers lists the Falloffs, Targets and Splines on the active object. A small empty button next to each places it with an object. Create Falloff Vertex Groups adds the vertex groups that Mesh Points Falloffs need.

Freeze #

Place it below the Falloff it freezes, with the same Falloff Name. It holds the value over time so the Falloff leaves a trail.

Panel Controls
Grow Speed, Threshold, Max Distance, Substeps. The value spreads to neighbors
Decay Hold (seconds), Rate (per second)
Blend Blend and Opacity. It holds the Falloff’s color too

A simulation: play from the start frame.

Realize #

Turns instances into real geometry anywhere in the stack.

  • Realize All Levels flattens nested instances. Levels only matters when All Levels is off.
  • Instance data is lost. Add an Ingestor after it to get pieces again.
